Short Takes
Earnings online
Beginning in May, UC employees whose salaries are directly deposited into their bank accounts will receive online earnings statements instead of paper receipts. The new system, aimed at reducing workload and costs as well as making payments safer and more secure, will start May 1 for monthly employees, and May 3 for biweekly employees. Statements will be available at UC For Yourself (https://ucfy.ucop.edu/ucfy/) to view and print. Those who wish to continue receiving paper statements may do so with their department’s consent. In early April, employees will get a letter from UCLA Corporate Financial Services describing the new online earnings statement feature.
An “A” from seniors
UCLA seniors report strong satisfaction with their academic experience and campus life. They also affirm they are intellectually challenged by the curriculum and the faculty, according to the first comprehensive survey of its kind. “Students who come here want to be challenged intellectually and seek new ideas, and the results of the survey show they are getting what they came to UCLA for,” said Judith L. Smith, vice provost for undergraduate education. Seniors also gave high marks to their broader campus experiences, including a wide range of experiences with students from diverse backgrounds. Janina Montero, vice chancellor of student affairs, said survey results show that students embrace the diversity of their experiences on campus. The May 2005 survey of students in the College of Letters and Science had responses from 5,800 seniors — 80% of the graduating class. Results can be found at www.college.ucla.edu/senior05.
Three cheers
For the second time in three years, the Daily Bruin has been named the national Newspaper of the Year by the Associated Collegiate Press. The award was presented on March 5 in Universal City at the Associated Collegiate Press convention attended by more than 800 student journalists from 31 states. The Daily Trojan from USC won honorable mention in the same category.
