UC President Robert C. Dynes has called it “the University’s most important campaign in recent years.”
Succession planning — the strategy to deal with the hand-off of leadership following a rise in retirements — is a top priority for the UC system.
In the next five years, UC expects to see a 300% increase in the retirements of its senior leaders. This, coupled with forecasts of a nationwide job-vacancy rate of nearly 10 million by 2010 and acute competition for leadership talent nationwide, makes the need to formulate an innovative workforce-planning approach imperative, UC executives said.
To lay the groundwork for a UC-wide effort to identify, grow and sustain leadership talent at all levels, nearly 200 UC senior managers and faculty, including 22 from UCLA, joined President Dynes March 19 and 20 in Irvine.
The meeting launched an institution-wide strategic program aimed at planning for the future and developing internal talent for the next generation of UC leaders.
Presenters and panelists attending the UC Senior Leadership Forum discussed talent development, succession planning, diversity, leadership search strategies and best practices.
The Office of the President has launched a Web site at www.ucop. edu/slf offering updates on this initiative as well as information on best practices, activities, programs and resources available at UC locations, including UCLA.
