Peter Sellars, a theater and opera director who is a professor in the department of world arts and cultures, and Charles Stanish, director of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology and professor of anthropology, have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. They join 173 other new fellows, including film director Martin Scorsese and former presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. All were selected for their preeminent contributions to their disciplines and to society at large. This year, 29 UC faculty were among the country’s leaders in scholarship, business, the arts and public affairs so honored.… The School of Dentistry has received a $1-million gift from Susumu Miyata, chairman of the board of trustees of Meikai and Asahi universities in Japan. For the past 13 years, Miyata, a philanthropist and educational entrepreneur, has sponsored an educational exchange program for students of the dental schools at all three universities. This gift formally establishes an endowment that will secure the program’s future and make it possible to include an exchange of faculty visits.… The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. has named Electrical Engineering Professor Mau-Chung Frank Chang the recipient of the 2006 David Sarnoff Award for his development of HBT power amplifiers, leading to their commercialization in wireless communication…. Professor of Biomathematics Sally Blower and postdoctoral fellows Romulus Breban and Raffaele Vardavas at the Geffen School of Medicine were awarded $75,000 from the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative to explore the emerging role of public health in integrating genomics into the control and prevention of infectious diseases. They will collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the "superbug" methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus…. The California Council on Gerontology and Geriatrics recognized Janet Frank with the Betty and James E. Birren Senior Scholar Award. Frank has held leadership positions on both the council and in the California Geriatric Education Center for many years. She is assistant director for academic programs in the Multicampus Program in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at the Geffen School of Medicine and an adjunct assistant professor in the School of Public Health.
