Jan Lin, a resident physician in the Department of Rheumatology, received a fellowship from the Southern California Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation to study the development of and new treatments for this autoimmune disease, which causes excess collagen to collect in the skin, joints, blood vessels and internal organs. She is the first person to receive this important two-year fellowship.
Computer Science Professor Jason Cong's research group received the 2005 Best Paper Award from the Association for Computing Machinery’s journal, Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems. The journal, which publishes results of research and development efforts in the area of design automation of electronic systems, singled out the group’s paper, "Technology Mapping and Architecture Evaluation for k/m-Macrocell-based FPGAs."
Patricia Ganz, professor of health services and medicine at the School of Public Health, was honored by the American Society of Breast Disease for her visionary leadership in the fight against breast cancer. She was recognized during a special session of the society’s 30th-anniversary symposium as one of seven global Pathfinders who have combined research and clinical practice with an interdisciplinary understanding to advance the fight against breast disease.
Francisco (Pancho) Bezanilla, Hagiwara Professor of Neuroscience in the David Geffen School of Medicine, has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. This lifetime membership is one of the most eminent honors in the scientific community, in part because of its selectivity and the role members play as policy advisers to the federal government.
Dennis J. Slamon, professor of medicine and chief of the UCLA Oncology Center, will receive the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology for his significant
contributions to both the organization and the practice of clinical oncology. He will present the Karnofsky Memorial Lecture, "Molecular Diversity of Human Breast Cancer: Therapeutic Implications," at the society’s annual meeting in Atlanta in June.
