VOL. 27. NO.1 AUGUST 15, 2006

Robberies bump up crime rate

Violent crime on campus and the surrounding Westwood area rose 9% in 2005 from the previous year, largely because of an increase in robberies, from 7 to 13 incidents. But overall, crime statistics looked relatively flat for 2005, according to a UCPD spokesperson.

Incidents of FBI Part I violent crime increased from 94 in 2004 to 102 in 2005. While there were no homicides last year, there were eight forcible rapes, the same number reported in 2004, and 81 assaults, up from 79 in 2004.

Major property crime went up 1% from 1,131 in 2004 to 1,140 in 2005. The good news in this crime category was that motor vehicle theft dropped 42% from 81 in 2004 to 47 in 2005, partly due to more diligent patrolling and vigilant employees, said Nancy Greenstein, director of community service for UCPD.

Burglaries increased 10% from 273 in 2004 to 299 in 2005. Police reported that university property valued at a total of $92,559 was stolen in 2005, the majority of it in computer office equipment. Approximately $1.02 million worth of non-university property belonging to individuals and others was also filched last year. Go to www.ucpd.ucla.edu for details.
