ANCIENT EGYPT ONLINE
For the past 30 years, the seven-volume “Lexikon der Ägyptologie” — published in Germany by a group of five main editors and hundreds of contributing scholars — has reigned as the bible of Egyptology. Over the next decade, however, researchers at UCLA will work on a project of far greater scope: the world’s first comprehensive online encyclopedia dedicated to all aspects of ancient Egypt and its legacy.
THEIR BEST TEACHERS ARE WINNERS
Each year, hundreds of letters pour in from former students who feel compelled — and also privileged — to tell a faculty committee about the UCLA teacher who changed their lives.
This year, these poignant letters, along with a large stack of detailed testimonials written by department chairs and admiring colleagues, have singled out six extraordinary individuals among Senate faculty to receive UCLA’s highest honor for exceptional teaching and mentoring that go on inside and outside of a classroom.
ENERGY TEAM LOOKS EVERYWHERE TO TRIM COSTS AND COVER SHORTFALL
An $8.5-million shortfall in state funds to cover UCLA’s energy costs is compelling Facilities Management to scour the campus looking for ways — big and small — to squeeze more energy out of every dollar spent on power.
ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY AT UCLA
Chancellor Albert Carnesale, building on UCLA’s long record of environmentally and socially conscious practices, has chartered a permanent committee to advise his office on advancing sustainability.
SIX FACULTY RESEARCHERS WIN SLOAN FELLOWHIPS
When Assistant Professor Mark A. Frye of the Department of Physiological Science learned he had just won a Sloan Research Fellowship, his first thought was to tell his wife, Cully Nordby, in person. Frye sprinted from his office in the Life Sciences Building to La Kretz Hall, then raced up six flights of stairs to the Institute of the Environment, where Nordby is assistant director for academics.
DYNES INSISTS HE WILL FIX COMPENSATION
UC President Robert C. Dynes reaffirmed his commitment to fixing the university’s compensation problems in response to demands by three state senators that he resign or be fired.

THE STORY OF MODERN ART AS TOLD BY ARTISTS
Nearly a decade before the Museum of Modern Art opened in New York, three artists founded the Societété Anonyme, Inc., to promote contemporary art among Americans. An illuminating exhibition, "The Societété Anonyme: Modernism for America" at the Hammer Museum draws on Yale University's collection of artworks held by the Societété, including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miró, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
VOICES
FAULTY DISCOURSE ON ‘ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS’
The news media regularly report that President Bush is snubbed by members of his own political party when he states a truism: “Immigrants are hard-working, decent human beings.” Because politics so often hinges on the emotional appeal of words, many conservatives want to retain firm control of the immigration issue by sticking to a discourse that disparages immigrants.
A CRISIS IN ADMISSION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS
The recent news concerning UCLA admissions for Fall 2006 is deeply troubling. African-American and Latino students — already woefully underrepresented among continuing UCLA students — made minimal gains in admissions systemwide, but actually lost ground at UCLA.
PERSONAL JOURNEY: MY ‘SAINTHOOD’ AT HARRODS
Last Christmas, my husband Ed and I went to Europe. I lugged my only winter coat, a black Alex Singer whose kimono sleeves and wide shoulders taper down to the waist and fall straight to the ankles. The coat is warm but very heavy — and out of fashion. If I wear my Patricia Underwood fedora and the coat, I look like a dead poet. We arrived in London from Paris two days before the biannual 50%-off sale at Harrods. Totally maxed out on my Amex card, I wasn’t planning to buy a thing.
