"Rumble" with architects and urban designers
Exhibition runs through June 14
A "space port" for outer space tourists of the not-so-distant future ... designs for bringing Chicago in out of the cold during that city's brutal winters ... buildings that look and feel as if they are moving — these and many other designs on contemporary life strut their stuff in "Rumble," the Department of Architecture and Urban Design’s premier all-student exhibition of studio work.
Initiated by department chair Hitoshi Abe and organized by vice chair Richard Weinstein and visiting assistant professor Kivi Sotamaa, "Rumble" sprawls across 6,500 square feet of studios, hallways, classrooms, gallery spaces and more at Perloff Hall. On view is work from the department's 30-week-long research studios, special topics studios and technology seminars.
These works, said Department Chair Hitoshi Abe at a June 9 press preview, "redefine the provocative opportunities confronting the next generation of architects," from cross-cultural issues in "China: Center for Emerging Artists" to the "Steel House" Studio, exploring a form of home construction that melds art with economic feasibility and sustainability.
Take a tour of the future at "Rumble," open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Saturday, June 14, when the exhibition closes at 2 p.m.
