The UCLA Pediatric Pain Program at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA received a $2,500 donation from 16-year-old Ashley Goodall, who suffers from a rare condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD). The funds were raised through a recent concert organized by the teen's nonprofit organization, Rock Out to Knock Out RSD, which she founded a year ago.... The Department of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA are pleased to announce the faculty appointment of Gary M. Satou. A former pediatric resident at UCLA, Satou received pediatric cardiology and echocardiography training at the Children's Hospital in Boston/Harvard Medical School. He assumes the directorship of the pediatric echocardiography laboratory and the fetal cardiac program at UCLA.... Scientists at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and at other top institutions in Los Angeles received a $1.8-million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation to fund collaborative research to genetically engineer the human immune system to fight melanoma. The project brings together top experts in basic science, tumor immunology, molecular imaging, embryonic stem cell biology, gene medicine and clinical research from UCLA, the California Institute of Technology, Children's Hospital Los Angeles and USC.... Rod Dykehouse, CIO for UCLA Medical Sciences, has been named the 2008 chair of CHIME (College of Healthcare Information Management Executives). Elected by CHIME's board of trustees, Dykehouse took on the role after the resignation of the previous chair, Ron Strachan.... Chandrashekhar Khare, professor of mathematics, was awarded the prestigious 2007 Fermat Prize for his proof in collaboration with Jean-Pierre Wintenberger of Serre's modularity conjecture in number theory. The Fermat Prize rewards research in fields where the contributions of Pierre de Fermat have been decisive, including number theory and analytical geometry.... Edward R. B. McCabe, a professor of pediatrics, human genetics and bioengineering, has been elected president of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG). His term with ASHG will include serving as president-elect in 2008 and as president in 2009, followed by two years on the board of directors. McCabe is physician-in-chief of Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and is Mattel Endowed Executive Chair in the Department of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine. He is also founder and co-director of the UCLA Center for Society and Genetics.... The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.1-million Major Research Instrumentation grant for the Advanced Light Microscopy core laboratory at the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA. The award will facilitate the acquisition of the first commercially available, super-resolution stimulated emission depletion (STED) confocal laser scanning microscope for nanoscopic resolution of biological samples.
