Andrew Apter was named co-winner of the Amaury Talbot Prize by the Royal Anthropological Institute for his book, "The Pan-African Nation: Oil and the Spectacle of Culture in Nigeria." The director of the James S. Coleman African Studies Center and professor of history and anthropology was also featured in the Charles E. Young Research Library Faculty Exhibit last month.
Sandra Harding, professor of social sciences and comparative education in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, has been named a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2007-2008. In this capacity she is traveling to universities and colleges where Phi Beta Kappa chapters are located, meeting with undergraduates, participating in classroom lectures and delivering an address to the entire academic community.
Baxter Larmon, professor of medicine and director of the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care, was appointed to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Emergency Medical Services Award Council. Larmon will provide advice regarding national emergency medical service needs, including ways to improve local and national systems, develop guidelines and standards, and enhance education, training and medical oversight.
Edythe London of the Semel Institute, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology, has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Marian W. Fischman Lectureship Award. This award, established in 2001 in memory of a much admired leader in drug abuse research, recognizes the contributions of an outstanding woman scientist in drug abuse research. London will receive the award on June 16 for her contributions to our understanding of the biology of nicotine dependence, and of stimulant abuse.
