Names and Faces

Edythe London, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and in the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology, has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Marian W. Fischman Lectureship Award. The award recognizes the contributions of an outstanding woman scientist in drug abuse research. It was established in 2001 in memory of Fischman, a leading scientist in the exploration of narcotics addiction.




James Elaine, curator of the "Hammer Projects" series at the Hammer Museum, has been selected to receive the 2008 Ordway Prize from the International Arts Movement. He will receive $100,000 as an acknowledgement of his many contributions to the arts world. Elaine is respected for his consistency in showcasing artists very early in their careers, often for the first time in an institutional setting, and thereby introducing the public to important new forms of expression.




Gary W. Small, Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging at the Geffen School of Medicine and professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior, received the 2008 Award for Research in Geriatric Psychiatry from the American College of Psychiatrists for his contributions to advancements in this field. Small is an internationally recognized investigator in age-related memory loss and dementia.




Courtney H. Lyder has been appointed dean of the UCLA School of Nursing, effective Aug. 1. Since 2003, he has been a faculty member at the University of Virginia, where he currently chairs the Acute and Specialty Care Department in the School of Nursing. He is also a chaired professor of nursing and a professor of internal medicine and geriatrics.
