Names and Faces

Nikki Caldwell, one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, has been named the head women's basketball coach at UCLA. She has served as an assistant coach at two-time defending NCAA champion Tennessee for the past six seasons and has been lauded as an excellent floor coach and a consistent star among college recruiters. In her 14 seasons as a collegiate player and assistant coach, her teams have posted a 404-76 record and won three national championships.

Daniel Geschwind, professor in the departments of Neurology and Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the Geffen School of Medicine, has received the Autism Speaks 2008 Scientific Service Award for his outstanding contributions to Autism Speaks and the field itself. A champion of autism research since 1995, Geschwind is a founding member and chief scientific adviser for Autism Genetic Resource Exchange.

Terence Tao, the first mathematics professor in UCLA history to win the Fields Medal, will be awarded the National Science Foundation's 2008 Alan T. Waterman Award on May 6 at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. The annual Waterman Award, the highest honor the NSF bestows, recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering supported by NSF with a research grant of $500,000 over three years.
