Sherin U. Devaskar, professor of pediatrics at the Geffen School of Medicine and a neonatologist at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, was honored with the 2008 Society for Pediatric Research Maureen Andrew Mentor Award at the Pediatric Academic Societies' annual meeting. The award recognizes individuals who have served as exemplary mentors for trainees and junior faculty who have developed investigative careers in the field of child health research.
Kuo-Nan Liou, distinguished professor of atmospheric science and director of UCLA's Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering, was recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for his substantial contributions to the 2007 report that led to the IPCC being awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize with former Vice President Al Gore.
Jack Raab, director of the UCLA Events Office, was named Volunteer of the Year by the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors–International (ACCED–I) at the organization's 28th annual conference in Las Vegas, Nev. This award recognizes an ACCED–I member who makes contributions above and beyond the norm to the association at the regional and/or national level.
The UCLA Anderson School of Management has appointed Mae Jennifer Shores assistant dean and director of M.B.A. admissions and financial aid. Shores most recently served as senior associate director for admissions and financial aid at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to her position at Wharton, she taught organizational behavior and negotiations at the International University of Moscow.
