Dennis Slamon, director of clinical/translational research at the Jonsson Cancer Center, has received two of the top awards given to scientists for his work in developing the breast cancer drug Herceptin. He received the Warren Alpert Foundation Scientific Prize, which honors significant medical breakthroughs, and a Gairdner International Award, touted by many as a precursor to the Nobel Prize. Herceptin is the first molecularly targeted therapy for breast cancer and has saved tens of thousands of lives since it was approved in 1998.... Judea Pearl, professor of computer science, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Toronto in June. He is being honored for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of computer science, as well as his efforts to promote cross-cultural dialogue and reconciliation.Ö The UCLA Film & Television Archive received a $40,000 grant from the Grammy Foundation Grant Program to preserve up to 15 Soundies. These culturally significant short musical films are time capsules of the musical and social climate of the 1940s.... Craig Gill has been appointed director of financial analysis in the Office of Academic Planning and Budget.
