The UCLA Center for World Languages (CWL) and the UC Consortium for Language Learning and Teaching won a four-year, $1.3-million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to establish a National Heritage Language Resource Center, one of 15 such federally funded centers. CWL Director Olga Kagan will lead the new center, assisted by Linguistics Professor Thomas Hinnebusch and Lecturer Linda Jensen.... The Jules Stein Eye Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology at the Geffen School of Medicine have appointed Michael Gorin the Harold and Pauline Price Chair in Ophthalmology and professor of ophthalmology in the retina and vision science divisions. Gorin served as assistant vice chancellor at the University of Pittsburgh.... Among the new officers elected by the Academic Senate is Michael Goldstein of community health sciences, elected vice chair/chair-elect. Paul Davis of earth and space sciences, Shane White of dentistry and Bill McDonald of theater, film and digital media will serve on the Executive Board.
