The Academic Senate has selected Professors Owen N. Witte from the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics and Thom Mayne from the School of the Arts and Architecture to be Faculty Research Lecturers for 2007-08. The annual lectures honor UCLA's most distinguished scholars.... Richard J. Shemin has been appointed professor and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the UCLA Medical Center, as well as vice chairman of the Department of Surgery and co-director of the new Cardiovascular Center. Shemin is one of the country's leading cardiothoracic surgeons....Vickie Mays, professor of psychology and director of the Center for Research, Education, Training and Strategic Communication on Minority Health Disparities, has been selected to serve on the Suicide Prevention Plan Advisory Committee by the California Department of Mental Health. The committee will provide advisory recommendations to the department as it prepares the California Strategic Plan for Suicide Prevention.
