Hitoshi Abe has been appointed professor and chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design. Abe has maintained an active international design practice in Japan as well as a schedule of lecturing and publishing. An internationally published author, Abe is known for work that is spatially complex and structurally innovative.
Alexander "Sandy" Astin
Alexander "Sandy" Astin, founding director of the Higher Education Research Institute and professor emeritus of education at the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, has received the 2007 Henry Paley Memorial Award from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. The award recognizes an individual who has unfailingly served the students and faculty of independent higher education.
Kathryn A. Atchison
Kathryn A. Atchison, vice provost of intellectual property and industry relations, and associate vice chancellor for research, was appointed a board member of Entretech, a leading business development organization. Entretech supports high-tech companies throughout Greater Los Angeles.
James T. McCracken
James T. McCracken, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the Semel Institute, has been awarded a $9.6-million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to establish a multidisciplinary research center on childhood cognitive disorders at UCLA. The new center will seek to advance treatment approaches for cognitive deficits, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and Tourette's Syndrome.
