Alison Bailey, an associate professor in the psychological studies division of the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, has authored and edited "The Language Demands of School: Putting Academic English to the Test," a book of essays that addresses the current challenges of educating and correctly assessing the English-language skills of learners in grades Kñ12.
Christian M. de Virgilio has been awarded the 2007 National Golden Apple for Teaching Excellence Award by the American Medical Student Association. He serves as professor of clinical surgery in the David Geffen School of Medicine; as vice chair of education and general surgery residency program director at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center; and as attending surgeon at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center.
Thomas S. Hines, professor emeritus in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design and in the Department of History, has received a 2007 Institute Honor for Collaborative Achievement from the American Institute of Architects. The award recognizes and encourages distinguished achievements of allied professionals, clients, organizations, architect teams and others who have had a beneficial influence on or advanced the architecture profession.
John Spokes has been selected as director of development for UCLA Live. Spokes, an experienced fund-raiser and management consultant with an extensive background in theater, currently serves on the board of Los Angeles' Cornerstone Theater Company and has dedicated many years of volunteer service as a board member for a variety of arts and social service agencies.
