Gerald D. Buckberg, distinguished professor of surgery in the cardiothoracic surgery division at the David Geffen School of Medicine, was awarded the 2007 Scientific Achievement Award by the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in Washington, D.C. Buckberg was selected for his significant contributions in myocardial preservation and his study of the anatomy and functional changes that cause heart failure.

Jim Kennedy, a Los Angeles Unified School District educator with a record of innovative work in urban schools, has been appointed principal of Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School. He will hold the Carol L. Collins UES Principal's Chair. The appointment is effective July 1. Kennedy is currently principal of Magnolia Avenue Elementary School in downtown Los Angeles.

Theodore B. Moore, associate clinical professor of pediatric hematology-oncology at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, has been selected as the winner of the second annual Today's and Tomorrow's Children's Fund Faculty Presentation Award. The award honors compelling presentations made to the philanthropic group by UCLA faculty members engaged in pediatric research. The fund will present Moore with a gift of $135,000.

Gloria Nathanson, former associate director of Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools (UARS), received an Excellence in International Education Award from the American Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers. The award recognizes her outstanding contributions to international education. Nathanson, a two-term president of the UCLA Staff Retirees' Association, is on recall for UARS.
