Staff Applause — Staff Assembly Scholarships
Each year UCLA Staff Assembly offers scholarships for career enhancement and professional growth. This year’s recipients, who were announced at a
June 17 awards reception at the Faculty Center, will receive up to $500 toward career development activities or initiatives.
Shawna Townsend, occupational therapist, Rehabilitation Services Townsend will use her scholarship to enroll in a graduate certificate program in low vision rehabilitation at the University of Alabama. As a primary therapist on the neurology and neurosurgery floor for three years, Townsend noticed the void in services for patients with visual dysfunction resulting from neurological injury.
Renee Roth, assistant manager, Accounts Payable She will put her award towards tuition during at Cal State Northridge, where she is a senior, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications.
Edward Soong, database and web administrator, Office of Instructional Development Soong will participate in an Adobe web design and developer online training lab, purchase a textbook and pursue Adobe Expert Certification solidify his web application knowledge and skills in web design.
Adam Sexton, daytime circulation supervisor, Law Library Sexton will enroll in a class in social networking in libraries towards his Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. This course will enable him to be certified as a reference librarian.
Rosa Coleen Wilson, assistant unit director, Nursing Wilson will use the award for tuition at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where she is a student in the Family Nurse Practitioner program. She hopes to work in the Acute Care setting at UCLA.
Ancy Cherian, clinical psychologist, Counseling and Psychological Services Cherian will apply the award toward self-study didactic training seminar and weekly supervision towards certification in the unified treatment of emotional disorders. This training will ultimately improve the care that the counseling center provides to UCLA students with anxiety and mood disorders.
Vanya Green, music therapist, Child Life Green will enroll in a Pro Tools training course. She recently established a state-of-the-art recording studio in the hematology/oncology unit playroom for use by longterm and critically ill children. The Pro Tools course will help her more effectively run the studio.
Sharona Partiyeli, faculty support staff, UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management The award will go toward fees for a final course in a project manager certification program. Partiyeli recently initiated a computer upgrade project at Anderson using knowledge gained from her certification program.
Helen Liu, marketing analyst, Life Sciences, Office of Intellectual Property
Liu, who pursues licenses for scientific innovations by UCLA researchers, will take a class in patent law, copyright issues and IT management.
Gia Marson, psychologist, Counseling and Psychological Services Marson will use her award to attend Reflections Body Image Academy, a three-day intensive workshop training that will enable her to launch a Reflections program at UCLA. The peer-led program has been proven to be effective in preventing the onset of eating disorders.
Stacey Tsan, fund manager, Anesthesiology & Emergency Medicine Tran is pursuing graduate education in the School of Public Health’s Executive Masters in Public Health, with an emphasis on health care management and policies.
Waiyi Tse, executive project manager, School of Public Affairs Tse will take the UCLA Extension course, Essentials of Grant Writing, the second in two courses. The course will help in her efforts to secure outside funding for many of the School of Public Affairs’ programs and initiatives.
Sherrie Martinez, medical student education coordinator, Office of Education, Department of Psychiatry Martinez will apply use her award to attend an Association on Higher Education and Disability workshop on learning disabilities and psychoeducational assessment. The class will benefit her as she becomes increasingly involved in projects for students with disabilities.
Rhonda Wade, executive assistant, External Affairs Wade is beginning work on her Bachelor’s degree in UCLA’s College of Letters and Science, majoring in women’s studies. She hopes her degree will serve her in her career aspirations of assisting in the advancement of young women.
Peter Lopez, benefits disabilitiy analyst, Medical Center Human Resources Currently a student in UCLA’s sociology department with a minor in labor and workplace studies, Lopez will use his scholarship to attend a Summer Sessions class in contracts and negotiations.
