United Way's HomeWalk to help shelter homeless

There's a way you can help homeless families in greater Los Angeles get off the streets or out of their cars where people have sought shelter and into an apartment.

homewalkkidCome walk five kilometers with the United Way of Greater Los Angeles on Saturday, Nov. 7, to raise money and lend a hand to people who have become homeless because of a job loss, catastrophic health issue or other devastating event.

Last year, more than 4,300 people participated in HomeWalk: The Walk to End Homelessness in Los Angeles, the homeless capital of the nation, and raised $500,000. That money helped move more than 2,600 homeless individuals and families into permanent housing over the last year.

With unemployment in L.A. County now running in double digits for the first time since the early 1990s and foreclosures in the county up 222 percent, your help is needed now more than ever, said campus supporters of United Way. UCLA's long partnership with United Way dates back to 1968.

HomeWalk 2009, an event for the entire family, will start from Exposition Park on Saturday, Nov. 7. Registration will open at 7:30 a..m., followed by opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. At 9 a.m. the route will open for walkers.

Show your support as a campus community by registering at www.ucla.edu/unitedway to join the UCLA team that will be walking in this event. Ask your coworkers to walk with you.
